Fox News rescues Afghan nationals who have helped network

Fox News has taken an active humanitarian role in the current Afghan crisis. 

The network has evacuated Afghan nationals who helped with the cable news network’s on-site production over the years, according to a company-wide memo issued Sunday and shared with The Washington Times.

The network has also evacuated their families.

“We have wonderful news to share with you this afternoon,” the memo advised.

“Fox News Media has successfully evacuated three Afghan nationals who formerly served as freelance associates, as well as an Afghan colleague from a regional media company, along with their respective families (a total of 24 people) from Kabul, Afghanistan. These associates include consultants who served as local producers, translators, drivers and security guards supporting our correspondents throughout Fox’s coverage of the war in Afghanistan for nearly two decades,” the communique noted.

Exact information about the timing or details of the rescue mission itself was not available.

“We are extremely proud to have assisted in their critical mission bringing them to safety in Doha where the Qataris have been aiding in several evacuations, and we are grateful to Fox Corporation for all their assistance,” the memo advised.

The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and The Washington Post were also among news organizations that successfully evacuated Afghan colleagues.

“For the past twenty years, brave Afghan colleagues have worked tirelessly to help The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal share news and information from the region with the global public. Now, those colleagues and their families are trapped in Kabul, their lives in peril,” the three news organizations said in a recent letter dated Aug. 16 to President Biden, seeking protected access to the U.S. control airport and safe passage for those seeking an exit.

“As employers, we are looking for support for our colleagues and as journalists, we’re looking for an unequivocal signal that the government will stand behind the free press. In that light, we ask the American government to move urgently and take three concrete steps necessary to protect their safety,” the three newspapers said.

It was a “global rescue effort,” according to a New York Times account published Friday.
