Woman 25 told yellow eyes were reflection of Ikea uniform has terminal cancer

A woman's devastating cancer diagnosis was nearly missed when a doctor believed her yellow, jaundiced eyes were due to her bright Ikea uniform.

Despite the GP dismissing the cancer symptom as a reflection of her top Chelsey La Frentz, 25, was sent for testingwhen she said she had started being sick after food and suffered itching.

The doctor assured her that the problem was most likely not cancer related.

But months later her cancer has now become terminal and the Australian is now left hoping for a miracle.

She told 9News about her original doctor appointment: "She didn't think [the eyes] were yellow, because I was wearing my uniform.

"She thought it was just my uniform. She said 'this is not going to be cancer - at your age it just doesn't add up'."

Test results went on to show there was a problem with her liver and her final diagnosis was only made after she become so unwell she was rushed to the emergency department.

She said her whole body had turned a yellow colour with jaundice because her liver wasn't flushing out toxins correctly, and she was also covered with rashes.

After undergoing an MRI scan she was given the heart-breaking news that she had bile cancer.

She said: "The emergency doctor came up to me and my mum and said, 'it's not looking good, it looks like cancer'. I was numb."

While surgery and chemotherapy had worked at first the cancer came back and is now said to be terminal.

But while having chemotherapy to try and prolong her life she bravely refuses to accept she is going to die.

"It's very scary. They pretty much said it was terminal and the chemo is going to extend my life," she said. "I try and stay positive. Miracles happen."

She is now backing a campaign which urges people to go and see their doctors if they have any symptoms similar to what she suffered, and despite the pandemic.

Symptoms of cancer could include unexplained weight loss, fatigue, tiredness, unexplained aches or pains, fever, or an unusual lump or swelling.

Bile cancer is one of the rarest cancers, and one of the most deadly.

The chance of surviving for five years is 20 percent, according to Cancer Australia, and about 2,300 people die from the disease each year.

Symptoms can include jaundice, dark urine and pale stools, upper abdominal pain, persistent nausea and weight loss.
