Young Bolton director tackles toxic approach to life
A THEATRE director from Bolton is premiering a new show all about toxic masculinity.
Connor Goodwin, 21, is directing his new show, Toxic, at the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse alongside scriptwriter and Salford University graduate Dan Lovatt.
Toxic, part of The Greater Manchester Fringe Festival, is a three-night, three-act play on September 6 to 9, centralising around the harrowing world of male depression and exploring the LGBTQ+ community.
The idea for Toxic came from case studies on mental health from a group of peers in a workshop at Salford University which Dan decided to turn into a play.
The show was initially programmed for Manchester Fringe 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was put on hold.
Now after several weeks of rehearsal, hours spent perfecting the script, planning and casting, the show is looking to be a sell out.
With seats left only for the Tuesday showing at 7.30pm, Connor and Dan are hoping that once their âinitial run is doneâ they will be able to âtake the show to more venues and communities in the New Year.â
After a stressful 18 months due to Covid-19, Connor wants to thank everyone for their support.
He said: âItâs a tough time for all of us, seeing the support come through for the show is truly heart-warming and I thank anyone and everyone that is encouraging independent theatreâ says Connor.
âWeâre all struggling big time at the moment and we promise to give you an amazing show. Theatre will never die but it has certainly taken a beating over the past 18 months.â
Connor believes that the show will highlight important topics.
He said: âI know that this show will be incredible, not just because Iâm biased, but because the themes and topics that weâre tackling are going to lend a spotlight to so many individuals suffering with mental health in the dark without seeking help.â
Tickets can be bought online for £8, but if you want tickets you will need to be quick as they are selling out fast.
