Severe thunderstorms and rainfall to hit Queensland

Queensland can expect severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall this week as a weather system passes through the state from South Australia and Western Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Helen Kirkup said this would come after rainfall fell on Sunday night that saw Springbrook receive 40 millimetres and Harrisville 62 millimetres while Coolangatta had 20 millimetres and Brisbane airport picked up five millimetres.

“Parts of the Lockyer Valley got storms last night with a few rumbles and decent drops of rain but it was fairly isolated,” she said.

“Today we’re going to see that cloud and the wind off the coast ease and won’t see too much in the way of rainfall near the coast but there will be a chance of a thunderstorm in the Maranoa district and Coalfields.

“We’ve got a trough system further west in South Australia and Western Australia and as it slowly moves through, the low pressure system will be quite unstable.

“There is a slight chance of thunderstorms down in the border region on Tuesday in the west, but it will be more likely on Wednesday.

“Brisbane and the Darling Downs could see a late shower and thunderstorms on Thursday.”

Ms Kirkup said the weather would clear up by Friday in time for a sunny weekend.
