John Barilaro to resign as NSW Deputy Premier

Deputy Premier John Barilaro has announced he will resign as leader of the Nationals and from Parliament, triggering a byelection in his seat of Monaro.

Mr Barilaro released a statement on Monday morning saying that he would formally resign as leader and call for a ballot in a party room meeting on Wednesday.

“I have decided now is the right time for me to hand the reins over to new leadership, and resign as Deputy Premier of NSW,” he said.

“As we emerge from lockdown, we must embrace this time as a new beginning for our State, and welcome the opportunity it presents for a refresh.”

Mr Barilaro will address the media on Monday morning.
