FBI accused of leaking private data to NYT after Project Veritas raid
The New York Times has obtained âprivileged communicationsâ of Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe, raising suspicions that an FBI source might have leaked the newspaper confidential data obtained during recent raids.
FBI agents raided the home of Project Veritas founder James OâKeefe last Saturday as part of an investigation into the acquisition of a diary purportedly written by President Joe Bidenâs daughter Ashley. On Thursday, less than a week after the raid, the New York Times published an article claiming to have obtained âinternal documentsâ from Project Veritasâ attorney.
The article sparked outrage among conservatives, who accused the FBI of leaking private communications from the organization to the newspaper.
âThe FBI raided Project Veritas on a pretext and is now leaking their privileged communications to the New York Times. This is a scandal,â tweeted lawyer and Human Events co-publisher Will Chamberlain, who called for the articleâs co-author, Adam Goldman, to be âsubpoenaed tomorrow and forced to reveal his criminal source.â
Chamberlain also raised further legal concerns, noting that Project Veritas âis currently in litigation with the New York Timesâ over a separate issue, which would make any leaks to the newspaper an even bigger scandal.
âThis isnât journalism, this is straight up theft,â he concluded.
Attorney Harmeet Dhillon â" who is currently representing Project Veritas and OâKeefe â" also accused the New York Times of publishing a âprivate, privileged correspondenceâ which âthey have no legal right to possess,â while political commentator and lawyer Mike Cernovich wrote, âThis is not a grey area. Itâs black letter criminal felonies committed by the FBI and the New York Times.â
Wait youâre saying the @nytimes went and published private, privileged correspondence of Project Veritas that they have no legal right to possess?! ð² But they say thatâs illegal! https://t.co/9ytkC1wciU

BREAKING! The federal court has just ordered the DOJ to STOP extracting data from our client, journalist James OâKeefeâs phone, and ordered a hearing. Counsel for Project Veritas asked the court to do this yesterday! pic.twitter.com/nBrmf4myuj
â" Harmeet K. Dhillon (@pnjaban) November 11, 2021The FBI took two of OâKeefeâs phones during its raid on his home and the Project Veritas founder said his devices contained confidential material, including information relating to his journalistic sources.
âThis is an attack on the First Amendment by the Department of Justice,â said OâKeefe this week, adding, âI've heard âthe process is the punishment.â I didn't really understand what that meant until this weekend.â
OâKeefe said he âwouldn't wishâ the situation âon any journalist.â
Something tells me that the Federal judge who ordered the FBI to stop removing files from Project Veritas devices is going to have some questions as to how attorney-client privileged communications were removed from those devices and sent to the NYT. https://t.co/RWIr9NCzVBpic.twitter.com/NZhwO8nPhN
